A plate of mee goreng mamak (Indian-style, 325 g) has about 598 calories, based on the Malaysian Food Composition Database (MyFCD) from the Ministry of Health's Institute for Medical Research. A smaller 170 g plate of mee goreng is about 281 calories. Char kuey teow with cockles comes to about 531 calories per 300 g plate, and bihun goreng to about 294 per 170 g plate. Maggi goreng has no official figure, but one block of instant noodles fried with an egg and a tablespoon of oil works out to roughly 540 calories. Below you will find the full numbers (kalori mee goreng, kuey teow and bihun goreng), how soup noodles compare, and easy ways to order a lighter plate.
How many calories are in mee goreng?
Values are calculated from the Malaysian Food Composition Database (1997) using its standard portions.
Two things stand out. First, fat: a plate of mee goreng mamak or char kuey teow carries about 29 g of fat, mostly from the oil used to fry the noodles. Second, sodium: even the smaller 170 g plate of mee goreng has about 1,112 mg, more than half of the World Health Organization's recommended limit of less than 2,000 mg a day for adults.
What about Maggi goreng?
MyFCD has no entry for Maggi goreng, so here is how the estimate above is built from its ingredients:
- 1 block of instant noodles (85 g): about 360 kcal and 12 g of fat. Instant noodles are pre-fried, so they already contain fat before they reach the wok.
- 1 egg (46 g): about 71 kcal and 6 g of protein.
- 1 tablespoon of cooking oil (12 g): about 108 kcal.
That adds up to roughly 540 kcal. A Maggi goreng made with two blocks of noodles, or fried with more oil, can easily pass 800 kcal. The sodium was not estimated because MyFCD's figure is for the plain noodle block without the seasoning packet or the sauces added at the stall, which contribute most of the salt.
Fried noodles vs soup noodles
Mee sup is the lightest of these, and gives about 20 g of protein. But "soup" does not always mean light: mee kari has more fat than a plate of mee goreng mamak because of the coconut milk in the curry. Soup noodles are also very salty, and most of that sodium sits in the broth, so leaving some of the soup in the bowl is an easy way to cut it.
How fried noodles compare with other Malaysian meals
- Mee goreng mamak: about 598 kcal
- Nasi lemak biasa: about 645 kcal. See our nasi lemak calories breakdown.
- Chicken rice, typical plate: about 476 kcal. See our chicken rice calories guide.
- 1 roti canai with dhal: about 359 kcal. See our roti canai calories guide.
- 1 plain tosai with dhal: about 205 kcal. See our tosai and chapati calories guide.
- Nasi goreng: about 637 kcal per plate. See our nasi goreng and satay calories guide.
Is mee goreng healthy?
Mee goreng, char kuey teow and bihun goreng are fine as an occasional meal, but they have a few weak points:
- Fried in oil. A full plate of mee goreng mamak or char kuey teow has about 29 g of fat.
- High in sodium. Soy sauce, chilli sauce and seasoning add up quickly; the smaller 170 g plate of mee goreng already has about 1,112 mg.
- Few vegetables. Usually a little choy sum, bean sprouts or cabbage.
- Moderate protein. The egg, chicken, prawns or cockles help, and a plate of mee goreng mamak has about 22 g of protein.
How to order a lighter plate
- Ask for less oil ("kurang minyak").
- Ask for extra vegetables ("sayur lebih") to make the plate more filling for fewer calories.
- Add protein, such as an extra egg or chicken, rather than extra noodles.
- Share a plate or choose a smaller portion, especially for Maggi goreng with two blocks of noodles.
- Choose mee sup on lighter days, and leave some of the broth.
- Choose an unsweetened drink. A teh tarik adds roughly 125 to 190 kcal; our guide to Malaysian drinks for weight loss compares the options.
For more filling local choices, see our list of protein foods for weight loss in Malaysia. On busy days, Drann's Chocolate Meal Replacement Shake has 116 kcal and 12 g of protein per sachet with water; our meal replacement guide explains how to use one well.
A note on these numbers
The figures come from the Malaysian Food Composition Database (1997), which lists nutrients per 100 g along with standard portions; we multiplied the per-100 g values by those portions. MyFCD has two kinds of mee goreng entries: a 170 g plate in its cooked-dishes section, and larger plates from its ready-to-eat meals study (325 g for Indian-style mee goreng and 300 g for fried kuey teow with cockles), which are closer to a typical stall portion. Its Hokkien mee sample weighed 751 g (about 1,149 kcal), much larger than a single serving, so we show a 300 g portion calculated from the per-100 g values instead. Sodium was not measured for the ready-to-eat samples. Real plates vary with the amount of noodles, oil and sauce, so treat these as good estimates rather than exact counts.
