Nasi Lemak Calories: Biasa, Ayam Goreng, Rendang & Bungkus (Malaysian Food Data)

A plate of nasi lemak biasa has about 645 calories, and adding one piece of ayam goreng brings it to about 916 calories, based on the Malaysian Food Composition Database (MyFCD) from the Ministry of Health's Institute for Medical Research. Most of that comes from the coconut rice itself: about 389 calories for a 230 g plate. Below is a side-by-side breakdown (kalori nasi lemak by component), what the common orders add up to, and practical ways to enjoy Malaysia's favourite breakfast with fewer calories.

How many calories are in nasi lemak, by component?

Values are calculated from the Malaysian Food Composition Database (1997) using its standard portions. Peanut and cucumber portions are our own estimate of a typical side, as noted.

Component (portion) Calories Protein Fat Sodium
Coconut rice (1 plate, 230 g) 389 kcal 9.7 g 13.1 g 777 mg
Sambal ikan bilis (1 serving, 40 g) 126 kcal 11.3 g 8.4 g 171 mg
Hen's egg, boiled (1 egg, 46 g) 71 kcal 5.9 g 5.1 g 56 mg
Peanuts (about 10 g, our estimate of a typical side) 54 kcal 2.6 g 4.2 g 5 mg
Cucumber (a few slices, about 30 g) 5 kcal 0.1 g 0 g 4 mg
Fried chicken, ayam goreng (1 piece, 94 g) 271 kcal 15.5 g 14.9 g 504 mg
Beef rendang (2 pieces, 50 g) 126 kcal 9.1 g 8.2 g 159 mg

The coconut rice alone is about 60% of a plate of nasi lemak biasa. The good news is that the sambal ikan bilis, egg and peanuts add real protein: about 30 g on a basic plate, more than many other hawker breakfasts.

Calories for common nasi lemak orders

  • Nasi lemak biasa (rice, sambal ikan bilis, boiled egg, peanuts, cucumber): about 645 kcal, a third of a 2,000 kcal reference day, and about 1,010 mg sodium.
  • Nasi lemak ayam goreng (biasa plus one piece of fried chicken): about 916 kcal, close to half of a 2,000 kcal day, and about 1,520 mg sodium.
  • Nasi lemak rendang (biasa plus two pieces of beef rendang): about 771 kcal.
  • Nasi lemak telur mata (a fried egg instead of boiled): a little more than nasi lemak biasa, because the egg absorbs some cooking oil.

Drinks add up too. A sweet teh tarik can add a lot of sugar to an already large meal; see our guide to Malaysian drinks for weight loss for lower-sugar options.

Sodium is worth watching. The World Health Organization recommends that adults have less than 2,000 mg of sodium a day, so nasi lemak ayam goreng alone uses up about three quarters of that.

What about nasi lemak bungkus?

The small nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaf or paper is sold everywhere, but there is no official figure because sizes vary a lot. If a small bungkus holds about half a plate of rice (about 115 g) with a smaller scoop of sambal, half an egg and a few peanuts, it works out to roughly 300 to 400 kcal. Two bungkus therefore land close to a full plate.

Is nasi lemak healthy?

Nasi lemak is more balanced than its reputation suggests: the egg, ikan bilis and peanuts provide protein, and the cucumber adds a little freshness. But it also has clear downsides:

  • Calorie-dense rice. Cooking rice in coconut milk adds fat, and most of the plate's calories come from the rice.
  • Saturated fat. Coconut milk is high in saturated fat, and fried add-ons such as ayam goreng add more.
  • Sodium. A basic plate already has about 1,010 mg.
  • Few vegetables. A few cucumber slices are the only greens on most plates.

Enjoyed now and then, and built sensibly, nasi lemak can fit into a healthy diet. The problem is usually the daily habit, the fried extras and the sweet drink alongside it.

How to enjoy nasi lemak with fewer calories

  1. Ask for less rice ("nasi sikit"). Halving the rice saves about 190 kcal.
  2. Choose a boiled egg over a fried egg or fried chicken.
  3. Go easy on the sambal, which carries oil and salt; a small scoop is plenty for flavour.
  4. Pick one protein, not three. Egg plus ikan bilis is already a decent amount of protein.
  5. Add vegetables where you can, such as extra cucumber or a side of ulam.
  6. Skip the sweet drink and choose teh O kosong or plain water.
  7. Balance the rest of your day with a lighter lunch or dinner built around vegetables and lean protein.

Planning breakfast ahead also helps on busy days. Drann's Chocolate Meal Replacement Shake has 116 kcal and 12 g of protein per sachet. If you are comparing other mamak favourites, see our breakdown of roti canai calories and chicken rice calories.

A note on these numbers

The figures come from the Malaysian Food Composition Database (1997), which lists nutrients per 100 g along with standard portions; we multiplied the per-100 g values by those portions. The database also lists a separate "nasi lemak, 1 medium plate (306 g)" at 165 kcal per 100 g, or about 505 kcal, but it does not describe which sides that plate includes, so we built our plates from the individual components instead. Real portions vary from stall to stall, especially the amount of rice, sambal and oil, so treat these as good estimates rather than exact counts.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How many calories are in a plate of nasi lemak?

About 645 kcal for nasi lemak biasa: a 230 g plate of coconut rice (389 kcal), a 40 g serving of sambal ikan bilis (126 kcal), a boiled egg (71 kcal), about 10 g of peanuts (54 kcal) and cucumber (5 kcal). Figures are based on the Malaysian Food Composition Database.

How many calories are in nasi lemak ayam goreng?

About 916 kcal: roughly 645 kcal for nasi lemak biasa plus about 271 kcal for one piece of fried chicken (94 g). That is close to half of a 2,000 kcal reference day.

How many calories are in a small nasi lemak bungkus?

There is no official figure because bungkus sizes vary. If a small bungkus holds about half a plate of rice with smaller sides, it works out to roughly 300 to 400 kcal.

How many calories are in the coconut rice alone?

About 169 kcal per 100 g, or about 389 kcal for a 230 g plate of coconut rice, according to the Malaysian Food Composition Database.

Is nasi lemak healthy?

Nasi lemak gives you a fair amount of protein from the egg, ikan bilis and peanuts, but it is high in calories, saturated fat from coconut milk and sodium, and low in vegetables. It is fine now and then, especially with a smaller rice portion and no fried add-ons.

Can I eat nasi lemak while losing weight?

Yes, if it fits your daily calories. Ask for less rice, choose a boiled egg over fried add-ons, go easy on the sambal, skip sweet drinks, and keep your other meals that day lighter.
