A plate of nasi goreng (330 g) has about 637 calories, and one stick of chicken satay has about 36 calories, based on the Malaysian Food Composition Database (MyFCD) from the Ministry of Health's Institute for Medical Research. Nasi goreng with chicken pieces comes to about 591 calories, while a plate of Chinese-style fried rice can reach about 949. Ten sticks of chicken satay are about 365 calories, or about 494 with half a cup of satay sauce. Below you will find the full numbers (kalori nasi goreng and kalori satay), estimates for nasi goreng kampung and pattaya, and simple ways to enjoy both with fewer calories.
How many calories are in nasi goreng?
Values are calculated from the Malaysian Food Composition Database (1997) using its standard portions.
Per 100 g, nasi goreng has about 193 kcal compared with 130 kcal for plain rice, mostly because of the oil it is fried in. The three MyFCD samples also differ a lot: the Chinese-style plate was both bigger (392 g) and much oilier, at about 52 g of fat, while the version with chicken had more protein and less sodium than the plain one. How the stall cooks it matters more than the name on the menu.
What about nasi goreng kampung and pattaya?
MyFCD has no separate entries for these two favourites, so use the plain nasi goreng figure as a starting point:
- Nasi goreng kampung: the closest reference is a plate of nasi goreng at about 637 kcal. Kampung style adds fried ikan bilis, chilli and often kangkung; the ikan bilis and extra oil push the calories and sodium up, while the vegetables add little.
- Nasi goreng pattaya: fried rice wrapped in an omelette. A plate of nasi goreng (about 637 kcal) plus a one-egg omelette (about 71 kcal) comes to roughly 710 kcal, before the oil used to fry the omelette. A two-egg wrap adds about another 71.
How many calories are in satay?
A typical order of 10 chicken satay with half a cup of sauce comes to about 494 kcal. Satay is usually served with ketupat or nasi impit (compressed rice); MyFCD has no entry for it, but as a guide, 100 g of plain cooked rice is about 130 kcal. The marinade often includes sugar, which is why chicken and beef satay carry some carbohydrate even before the sauce.
Satay sizes vary a lot between stalls. A heavier 10-stick sample in MyFCD's ready-to-eat meals study weighed 353 g and came to about 642 kcal, so count bigger sticks accordingly.
How they compare with other Malaysian meals
- Nasi goreng: about 637 kcal per plate
- Nasi lemak biasa: about 645 kcal. See our nasi lemak calories breakdown.
- Mee goreng mamak: about 598 kcal. See our mee goreng calories guide.
- 10 chicken satay with sauce: about 494 kcal
- Chicken rice, typical plate: about 476 kcal. See our chicken rice calories guide.
- 1 roti canai with dhal: about 359 kcal. See our roti canai calories guide.
Are nasi goreng and satay healthy?
- Nasi goreng is mostly rice and oil. A plate has about 87 g of carbohydrate and 25 g of fat, with modest protein and few vegetables.
- It is salty. A plate of plain nasi goreng has about 1,465 mg of sodium, well over half of the World Health Organization's recommended limit of less than 2,000 mg a day for adults.
- Satay is one of the better hawker choices. It is grilled rather than deep fried and gives about 28 to 31 g of protein per 10 sticks.
- The extras add up. The peanut sauce, ketupat and a sweet drink can double the calories of the satay itself.
How to order lighter
- Ask for less oil ("kurang minyak") when ordering nasi goreng.
- Choose nasi goreng with chicken or egg for more protein, and ask for extra vegetables.
- Share a plate, or ask for less rice ("nasi sikit").
- For satay, keep the sauce on the side and dip rather than pour, and fill up on the cucumber and onion.
- Go easy on the ketupat if you are already having rice or noodles elsewhere in the day.
- Choose an unsweetened drink. A teh tarik adds roughly 125 to 190 kcal; our guide to Malaysian drinks for weight loss compares the options.
For more filling local choices, see our list of protein foods for weight loss in Malaysia. On busy days, Drann's Chocolate Meal Replacement Shake has 116 kcal and 12 g of protein per sachet with water; our meal replacement guide explains how to use one well.
A note on these numbers
The figures come from the Malaysian Food Composition Database (1997), which lists nutrients per 100 g along with standard portions; we multiplied the per-100 g values by those portions. MyFCD has satay data from more than one study. The chicken and beef figures above come from its cooked-dishes section (10 sticks weighing 150 g). The mutton satay comes from a separate sample with smaller sticks and leaner meat, so its numbers are not directly comparable. MyFCD's satay sauce sample lists only 1.3 g of fat per 100 g, which is unusually low for a peanut-based sauce; recipes with more oil and ground peanuts will be higher, so treat 129 kcal as a low-end figure. Sodium was not measured for the ready-to-eat samples. Real portions vary with the amount of rice, oil and sauce, so treat these as good estimates rather than exact counts.
